Mario Poulet et Bahareh Azimi were inspired by Le Corbusier’s holiday cabin at Roquebrune Cap-Martin on the Côte d’Azur when they went to design a bookshop specialised in architecture, design, urbanism and landscaping, in the Parisian ‘village’ of the Marché d’Aligre.
New Parisian concept store, completely dedicated to products coming from the United States offering a wide line of products foods (grocer’s shops, sauces, alcohols…) and non food (cosmetics, candles, bags…) of premium quality, totally stemming from small American producers.
In this huge space there were hundreds involved. Some animals roam freely, others - the more dangerous - are enclosed or are housed in the aviary designed by Bernard Tschumi. The design is otherwise by the Osty design studio which came up with the landscaping, the water features, and the new layout of the site.
How to build 28,000 sqm on a site that is only 2,000 sqm on the ground was a challenge in itself. The organic volume, like a giant caterpillar, creeps up over ve stories but it shouldn’t be seen as just a caprice by the architect Renzo Piano, it also allows the building to ll the space without touching its neighbours.
